Here in Australia, the issue with them isn’t so much Small Is Good, or even Where Are They, but Why Are They So Expensive?

A niche product, obviously. My usual suppliers, Vanbar Photographics in Melbourne, won’t stock it, staff told me that’s because of lack of interest/demand in it. One other supplier has it listed online – but at AUD $18.90 a roll for the P30 when it’s available, which it seems to be in “limited quantities” (= photospeak for you can buy 1-2 rolls at a time), it’s unlikely to make any significant dent in Ilford’s sales.

With our dollar now worth zilch on the overseas market (at last check it was firmly stuck at $0.66whatever US cents) ordering from overseas is no longer an option. Sad, but there we have it.

Many of us were interested in Ferrania’s “renaissance” and keen to help however we could, when there was so much to-do about their rebirth posted on the ‘net, but now after what? six or seven years of delays and obfuscation and poor communication on their part, most of the goodwill has evaporated.

Yeah if Ferrania didn’t put “Panchro” right on box, I’d be more sympathetic for sure. And if it is getting any response to red, it pales in comparison to something like Acros, which actually tells you its Orthopan. I definitely want to get Orto and put it through my Rollei SL2000f to see it 1:1.

P30 is actually ortho-panchromatic film, with reduced sensitivity to red, and designed for portraiture (this can be seen in one of the early photos of historical documents Ferrarnia posted, showing the notebook page containing the film’s original formula). But darn you’re right – it sure would help if Ferrania was less opaque with the info they provide! Maybe the new film is completely ortho, rather than “semi ortho” like P30!
