Prices for all cameras have gone way up, especially digital point and shoots. But good news, there are lots of 5mp and below that can be had for really cheap, and are perfect for little kids.

I have borrowed some cameras to them, because I thought that theories must be for kids at max 10% and practicing outside 90% …. during the 10 little % the kid who used my F5 sticked is finder pressed on the shutter 10 images secondes, and told me :
“It’s a submachine gun, cool”. I thought, yes this is, but 1 % of theory is really enough, …
Your choice is great.
Kids had surprised me like I thought : they can create impressive images, still you give them one rule “freedom of creation after theory”.
😉

Easy to operate and you can bring it to the pool or beach. Recently she started shooting film with a Leica AF-C1 that my dad found for $5. She loves the zoom and flash.

All excellent points. I almost mentioned the Marlboro version (and to avoid it) in the article. Very funny.

An old phone would also work great. Good idea. And I do particularly enjoy the idea of having a digital frame for them to display their photos in their room. Very smart.

And I agree, again, that it’s okay if they don’t take to photography. Kids will find their way best with kind guidance.

Maybe skip that one as a gift for kids 😀
I don’t have kids, so others may correct me, but at young ages maybe a smartphone (like your old one after you upgraded to a new model) would suffice. That is until the child is certain they like this activity/hobby. Couple it with Pokemon Go and they’ll be out in fresh air capturing both pokemon and photos. And then transfer the pictures to a digital frame. It’s a cheaper solution and provides instant gratification for the child; kids being notoriously impatient waiting for labs or parents to develop and print the films. And with a digital frame on their (bedside) desk looping their pictures they can focus individually on a picture and learn from it. And if the child doesn’t like your hobby it’s ok too, they’ll find something else that makes them happy.

I am lucky enough to have a young daughter who is somewhat interested in photography. I have 3 children, by the way, and I put a Fuji disposable camera into each of their Easter baskets last year. Only my youngest daughter, age 9, was keen to get out on a photo walk soon thereafter and use the camera. After she and I developed those shots together at home she quickly wanted to get out and shoot some more. I loaded up my Nikon L35AF and we took another photo walk the following week. For her birthday I gave her a Canon Telemax point and shoot that I bought off Ebay and 6 rolls of Ultramax 400 so she could have her very own film camera to carry whenever she wants. We’ve had some very fun times together shooting film and I love to see what her creative mind comes up with. I haven’t started-in on any technical details of photography with her yet. I’d rather wait and see if she comes to me with those questions as she continues to shoot. I have an older DSLR with a couple lenses she can use when it comes time for her to experiment with the exposure triangle.
