Michael, I use the GN on my plain prism F2 and shooting from 5.6-8-11 it produces images just as wonderful as my 45 AI-P

You’re welcome James! It’s kind of funny, this lens similarly to the Pentax SMC- 40mm 2.8, has been almost panned on the internet by those who apparently have never used it, but are living in an echo chamber repeating what they have heard from other people who also never used it..

Nikon released this lens with the FM3A. The FM3A was essentially Nikon’s manual focus film camera hurrah. Picking the best attributes of what came before and combining that into one camera. Does anyone actually think that the lens they would intentionally pair with the FM3A would not be spectacular where it counts? In real image making?

And the size! It seems weirdly small at first but then you realize that you have been accustomed to having to deal with big, fat lenses. Sure pull out that 1.2 behemoth when you need it at night, but during daylight? Small is beautiful, it makes the camera more fun to use, more fun to take with you and more discrete.

I had the choice between black and silver, but much prefer the black. IMO it just suits the form factor better.

On black and white film it has better contrast, sharpness and tone than my other normal length lenses. Maybe having so few elements allows it to really shine for this use?

I have always been curious about this one, being mostly a Nikon shooter. But what has be scratching my head is your comment that you got rid of your FM3A. How could you, James? 😉
